08.11.2014 La Roux @ The Institute, Birmingham

On a rather chilly night La Roux as well as support act ‘Meanwhile’ brought heat to the venue.

‘Meanwhile’ was hard to classify (which is always a plus) as their songs were  reminiscent of ABC, David Bowie and Heaven 17 all at the same time while being unique as well. Not all songs were necessarily great material but enjoyable nonetheless. Because of the retro feel to Meanwhile’s music I don’t think they will dent the charts anytime soon yet there is a part of me that wishes them well and wants the band to prove me wrong. 30 odd years ago they would have been a smash hit 

Not long after ‘Meanwhile’ vacated the stage La Roux aka Ellie Jackson and her four-piece band came on and from the first beat onward it was a sonic feast.


Songs from both albums were equally embraced by the audience and at some stage Ellie looked at the setlist and said: “I am actually annoyed that there aren't more songs”. Perhaps these words will be an indication that there won’t be another 5 years in-between album releases.











Ellie was in control of her voice and her audience throughout the evening and her band was fantastic and very motivated, they were all fun to watch and to listen to.

01.11.1991, Kongresshalle Frankfurt: KRAFTWERK „The robots“, „Autobahn“, „Tour de France“, „The model“, „Computerworld“ „Music non Stopp“ ... the list of hits of the cult band from Düsseldorf is really remarkable and after nine years of stage absence the “Robots” once more embark on a tour. The Kongresshalle (Congress hall) Frankfurt was sold out. The show was scheduled for 8 p.m. and the tickets cost DM 38,50,- (quite a lot back then) Shortly after 8 p.m. strange electronic noises echoed from the speakers still with the lights fully on. The sounds lasted for almost 15 minutes. Then they stopped: Showtime: “Ladies and Gentleman, Madame’s et Monsieur’s, Meine Damen und Herren: Die Mensch Maschine (The man machine)” ... After this introduction from the „Voice of energy“ Kraftwerk started the gig. Hutter, Schneider und co. „lifeless“ as usual.   Gary Numan is arguably one of the most charismatic and one of the weirdest performers simply because he has an awesome voice and writes great tunes but where he starts to sing within any given song seems abrupt and out of sync but let’s just settle for unconventional, which is an awesome thing to be. Gary and the musicians he recorded with in his early career had the band name ‘Tubeway Army’ and eventually it became Gary Numan and Tubeway Army and then just Gary Numan, and while most of the musicians from the Tubeway Army days continued to record and work with him, I personally always felt that the music changed after the abandonment of that distinction ‘Tubeway Army’.  It could be argued that Numan always was the principle songwriter within that unit, when I listen to the first ‘Tubeway Army’ album by the same name and ‘Replicas’ released in 1979 as Gary Numan & Tubeway Army it has a distinct magic in it and an identifiable musical flavour. 2003 - Beauty and the beast ON ICE

27.03.2003 Point Theatre / Dublin Walt Disney’s Beauty & the beast On Ice Just to say: It was superb. Merchandising good were to be found on all levels of the Point Theatre. From torches with a built in rose to sweet dishes to Belle as a puppet wearing a golden costume to the beast as a teddy bear – everything your (or your children’s hearts) desire. The prices though were beyond daylight robbery. On the other hand side it is always great quality when it says: Disney! The show starts with a medley performed by Disney’s cult figures Mickey, Donald and Balu before the real play begins. With great humour and great skill the actors “fly” across the ice and even though it is clear right from the start that Belle will fall for the beast and thereby lifts the curse it was still nice to watch.
