30 years Erasure party: Shelter, Neil Francis, Destination and a special appearance by Andy Bell

Sometimes it feels hard to relate to when people refer to events as magical, but this night was not only epic in every sense of the word but purely magical, too.

Depeche Mode and Yazoo – founding member Vince Clarke and the ever flamboyant Andy Bell’s epic musical journey started three decades ago with the release of their first single “Who needs love like that”.Millions of record sales and releases later, some hitting the upper regions of the global charts while others went almost unnoticed or even slowed down the band’s career, a crowd of die hard fans came together, organised by the amazing Rory Jones and wonderful behind-the-scenes people, to celebrate the British institution that is Erasure.

2014s release ‘The Violet Flame’ and the tour saw Erasure’s star on the rise once more and Classic Pop magazine named the album ‘album of the year’.

It was on that tour that Shelter garnered a large fanbase of their own while supporting Erasure for eight nights. And it was after a gig of that tour that Erasure fan Neil Francis sang ‘A little respect’ at a London tube station which turned him into a 20 million + views youtube – sensation.

And both Shelter as well as Neil Francis (who have since collaborated on a song) were part of the lineup of this special evening. Another band known for performing unique versions of Erasure – penned tunes (and yazoo ones as well) are Destination who were also on the bill followed by an amazing DJ set to round off the night – and all that for a tenner (including cake and buffet) AMAZING.

And if that doesn’t sound magical enough the unannounced visit of Erasure’s own Andy Bell who then even sang with Neil Francis and patiently allowed himself to be photographed with his fans clearly highlighted how much of a fan/band relationship and bond there is.

Apart from their own material there were also plenty of Erasure covers by the artists who mingled with the crowd after their respective performances and danced along to the ever-amazing tunes of Erasure.

01.11.1991, Kongresshalle Frankfurt: KRAFTWERK „The robots“, „Autobahn“, „Tour de France“, „The model“, „Computerworld“ „Music non Stopp“ ... the list of hits of the cult band from Düsseldorf is really remarkable and after nine years of stage absence the “Robots” once more embark on a tour. The Kongresshalle (Congress hall) Frankfurt was sold out. The show was scheduled for 8 p.m. and the tickets cost DM 38,50,- (quite a lot back then) Shortly after 8 p.m. strange electronic noises echoed from the speakers still with the lights fully on.   Gary Numan is arguably one of the most charismatic and one of the weirdest performers simply because he has an awesome voice and writes great tunes but where he starts to sing within any given song seems abrupt and out of sync but let’s just settle for unconventional, which is an awesome thing to be. Gary and the musicians he recorded with in his early career had the band name ‘Tubeway Army’ and eventually it became Gary Numan and Tubeway Army and then just Gary Numan, and while most of the musicians from the Tubeway Army days continued to record and work with him, I personally always felt that the music changed after the abandonment of that distinction ‘Tubeway Army’.  It could be argued that Numan always was the principle songwriter within that unit, when I listen to the first ‘Tubeway Army’ album by the same name and ‘Replicas’ released in 1979 as Gary Numan & Tubeway Army it has a distinct magic in it and an identifiable musical flavour. 2003 - Beauty and the beast ON ICE

27.03.2003 Point Theatre / Dublin Walt Disney’s Beauty & the beast On Ice Just to say: It was superb. Merchandising good were to be found on all levels of the Point Theatre. From torches with a built in rose to sweet dishes to Belle as a puppet wearing a golden costume to the beast as a teddy bear – everything your (or your children’s hearts) desire. The prices though were beyond daylight robbery. On the other hand side it is always great quality when it says: Disney! The show starts with a medley performed by Disney’s cult figures Mickey, Donald and Balu before the real play begins. With great humour and great skill the actors “fly” across the ice and even though it is clear right from the start that Belle will fall for the beast and thereby lifts the curse it was still nice to watch.
